Marinette County, Wisconsin is located in Northeast Wisconsin on the shores of Green Bay on Lake Michigan, and borders Michigan's upper peninsula. Gem Mining

Travelers looking for locations to mine minerals or pan for gold can usually find samples of several of these types of minerals in a weekend gem mining excursion to Marinette County. Gold is found throughout the state of Wisconsin because of the glacial sediments. These sediments contain small amounts of gold, and small particles or what is called “flour gold” can be panned in streams and rivers in Marinette County. Visitors to Marinette may do recreational panning without a license as long as no harm is done to stream banks and bottoms and as long as large amounts of sediment are not released into the water. Other gems found in this area include: citrine, amethyst, emerald, quartz, moonstone and ruby.

Waterfalls

The County of Marinette is known as the Waterfall Capital of Wisconsin. This area is home to 14 waterfalls, each with its own unique features. Seekers of natural treasures will enjoy 20 scenic county parks throughout the county, with overnight camping and hiking trails. Scenic bicycle routes provide another look at the natural beauty of this area, and cross-country skiing and snowmobile and ATV trails give year-round pleasure to nature lovers of all ages. Plan a full day of site-seeing to visit all the waterfalls in Marinette County. Each waterfall is within walking distance from parking areas in waterfall parks.

History

The Wisconsin Historical Society gives those in search of a taste of history many opportunities. Near Marinette County, explore the Wade House which takes visitors back to the time of stagecoach travel. The Marinette County Historical Society Logging Museum features information and artifacts from Wisconsin’s logging era. It also focuses on the Native American History of the area and Marinette herself, a 19th century trading post owner for whom the county and city was named.

Local Attractions

Those with an eclectic taste for antiques, artisan crafts and art find many opportunities to explore in Marinette County, Wisconsin. Throughout the summer months, both the Main Street Farmers Market and the Wausaukee Farmers Market provide visitors with selections of local produce, flea market items and other vendor products. The 2011 Flea Market at Erickson Park provides sellers an opportunity to showcase their items for a small per table fee. No reservations are required.
